I’m sure that there are certain digital photography terms which are not familiar to all the users. One very common question is what is ISO on digital cameras. ISO is a term that denotes just how sensitive the digital camera’s image sensor is reporting it to the amount of light in the surrounding environment. In more familiar terms, we can tell you that the higher the ISO is, the bigger chances you have to take pictures in poorly lit environments.


On regular photography cameras, when you wanted to change the ISO, you must have changed the film first.  With modern digital cameras, all you have to do is to dial in the ISO or choose from the existent preset ones. Aside from knowing what is ISO on digital cameras, there are a couple of things that you should know about ISO speed and exposure if you really are a photography passionate. ISO is the one that also affects the shutter speed and the aperture combination which are required in order to get the right exposure. A digital camera will normally warn you when there is not enough light to take a proper picture. If you are not even allowed to use the on-board flash, you must use a higher ISO. If the ISO of the camera is set to AUTO mode, the camera will select a higher ISO automatically. Of course, you can also select one manually.

In order for you to understand what the term “noise” means when we refer to ISO, it is easier to compare it to the graininess that could have been found in film. An image sensor will sometimes exhibit noise when we are dealing with high ISO speeds. Noise is definitely something you don’t want on your pictures because it leads to colored dots that ruin the aspect of the image.  Noise is something very commonly found in the case of high ISOs. The noise may not be very much of a problem but it depends on the size of your prints. Different programs were created especially for noise reduction but the process is just a bit complicated so save it for pictures that you wish to print in a very large format. Since noise is something that you get when choosing a high ISO, it all comes down to a matter of whether to get a noisy image or not to take the picture at all.



Explaining different steps about how ISO works is not very difficult, but why fill your head with all sorts of information when there are just some fact that you need to be aware of. When you want to obtain the best image quality, you should use the lowest ISO possible. In order for you not to worry about this aspect, you should make sure that the camera is set to AUTO ISO and then it will automatically select the lowest ISO. When you are dealing with a large image sensor it means you can use a high ISO speed without having to worry about noise. You can then take pictures even in poorly lit environments and your pictures will not be under exposed.
