What is BlackBerry technology?

The question might sound a little bit silly, because people are very interested in the mobile phones world and they’re always informed on the latest innovations that appear just like mushrooms after the rain. But I’m sure there are still many people out there who don’t know very well what’s with the Blackberry device and what “tricks” one can do with it. Therefore, for those who are already familiar with the device, have a little patience! Reading something that one already knows very well never hurt anyone, as far as I know. And for those who aren’t “connoisseurs”, prepare yoursleves to become one!

So, you should know right from the start that the BlackBerry is a wireless handheld device that was introduced to the large public back in 1999, when it was nothing but a two-way pager. It was in 2002 when the the famous BlackBerry smartphone was released. This one came in a totally different form, as it was designed to support all sorts of features such as mobile telephone, push e-mail, text messaging, internet faxing, web browsing, as well as all sorts of wireless information services and a multi-touch interface.

Now, who came up with the idea of developing such a device? The company is called Research in Motion (also known as RIM), which is a Canada-based company, with the headquarter in Waterloo, Ontario.

When it first appeared, the handheld was focused on the e-mail feature. Research in Motion decided to offer the BlackBerry e-mail service to more devices than just the BlackBerry ones, which means that it was expanded to non-BlackBerry handhelds, like the Palm Treo. The BlackBerry Connect is the software that allows something like this to happen.

The devices come with PDA applications, including the address book, the calendar, notes, alarm clock, calculator and the to-do lists, but it also features telephone capabilities on the recent models. However, the BlackBerry is very well known worldwide for the fact that it allows users to send and receive e-mail as long as they have access to a wireless network. There are also the QWERTY keyboard, a scroll ball, placed in the middle, and the Push-to-Talk feature (the latter can be found on some models, only).

Now let’s see what’s the thing with the operating system that you can find on the BlackBerry. Especially developed by RIM for the BlackBerry, the proprietary multi-tasking operating system comes with support for Java MIDP 1.0 and WAP 1.2. The processor suffered some changes, evolving from the Intel-80366 to Intel XScale 624MHz Cpu, available on the latest BlackBerry 9000 series, which is, precisely because of the use of this CPU, the fastest ever built.

To better understand to what extent the BlackBerry is spread in the whole world, let me tell you that at the end on last year (on December 18th 2008, to be more precise) Research in Motion made an announcement that amazed everyone: there are approximately 21 million BlackBerry subscribers. Can I say “Oh my God!”? Can I, can I?
