The iPhone - Delayed in Canada

As I write this, the iPhone is only available on the black market in Canada, and what you can get for an indecent price is an iPhone that was hacked to work with various Canadian mobile carriers. Unfortunately, you can't be sure that the next software update from Apple won't render your wonder-phone useless, since it happened already, and we already talked about it here. Now, to make things even worse, a legal dispute adds another obstacle in the path of the iPhone. So, what happened this time?

It happened before in the US, now it happens in Canada... it's nothing else than the name!!! The Toronto-based Comwave Telecom is a company that sells voice-over-Internet services and products using the same name as Apple's mighty phone, and they are going to defend their name... at least until they get a nice trade from Apple for the rights to use this name in Canada, of course.

While UK and Germany are going to receive on their markets the iPhone officially next month, Canada's wait time is currently unknown. Since Comwave filed its complaint to the Canadian Intellectual Property Office regarding Apple's use of their trademark for a handheld and mobile device using the notorious name, this problem adds to the lack of a deal between any Canadian mobile carrier and Apple.

It's a real shame to find out about things like this, but it seems that Canada's only provider using the GSM standard required by the iPhone is Rogers Wireless, and no deal was signed between them and Apple yet, but once Steve Jobs' company manages to solve this issue, they also need to have the rights to use the "iPhone" name.

Pfeew, if things continue to work this way, it seems the wonder phone is going to become obsolete until it reaches all corners of the world officially, and that's not what Apple needs, I am sure of it!
