The Butterfly Knife MP3/CD Player Concept

Published by Sierra Monica B., on Nov 20 2007, in the categories: Gadgets

This is a picture that circulated over the Internet back in August but as I think it is an interesting design concept I will write about it too because probably not all of you have heard about it.

It is called The Dual Music Player and is a concept coming from Yong-Seong Kim, a Korean guy that all his life has studied design, and that came with a practical idea of a butterfly knife-style MP3/CD player.

The Butterfly Knife MP3 CD Player Concept

The concept is pretty cool taking into consideration the fact that it happened at least one time in your life to listen music at your MP3 player and at a moment you felt like wanted to hear some old songs that you left on CDs at home.
This device lets you do both things - listen to the MP3 player and CDs.

The Butterfly Knife MP3 CD Player Concept

The Dual Music Player is compatible with Bluetooth headphones and plays MP3 when in its normal shape, and if you open the both sides it becomes a CD player, so you wouldn’t need 2 devices for that.
Let’s hope that someone will be interested in it so much that it will start the mass production.

First, this article seems like it was written by a fifth grader. Why would someone publish such a poorly written thing, even on a crappy website that no one reads.
Second, for being a tech website there is almost no specs or features worth reading about.
Third, what a stupid concept. Who would carry around something like that? You'd damage every CD you put into it.

    very cool... dope

  • Blue said on 11/20/2007:

    Lame

  • DavyJay said on 11/20/2007:

Uhm.... The Poop Man... your kinda a bitch.... and I thought it was cool, you'd damage your CD's but who gives a shit. That would look awesome!

  • Hiney Manush said on 11/20/2007:

While I think this is an interesting concept, not very practical. I agree with the Poop Man, the article looks like it was written by a fifth grader.

  • Mike said on 11/20/2007:

I also agree with Poop. While this could be an interesting creation in theory, it's incredibly impractical. If the CD somehow survives, it would saw through your pocket.

  • Sidiva said on 11/20/2007:

I think it would be a wonderful.
You fools, of course it would be impractical for CD's - if you attempt to use it like a portable CD Player (a.k.a. Diskman). It's meant to be used like a stereo - to just stand there like your everyday CdPlayer. DUH! Frickin Idiots.....
Think outside the box, that someone gives you.

However, it would be nice if they added the option of being able to burn the cd right to the player basically converting it to a MP3 - so you can listen to it there, or if you want to take it with you, that's possible to...

    :)

  • JHessick said on 11/20/2007:

Even if you listened to the cd while the thing wasn't moving, I fear it'd still be highly damaging to the cd and could potentially skip a good bit. Looks neat, but aesthetics aside the idea is kind of silly.

  • Sierra said on 11/20/2007:

Well Poop Man, by the way nice nickname, it probably represents you, from what i can see in those pictures and from what i've read, this device will lay on some desk while playing the CDs so these CDs won't be touched. It could happen only if you hit them by mistake or something.

  • DasBling said on 11/20/2007:

Poop man, I agree. This is really useless and kinda silly. The only thing that would be useful about it is if you could rip a CD on the spot from lets say a friend so you can throw it on your own Ipod. Otherwise this is just a Sony DiscMan in which case will protect your CD's from being scratched. For Sierra, if you have this on your desk, why not just use your PC CD player? Why even risk messing up your music?

Again, silly and useless..two thumbs down!

  • Richard said on 11/20/2007:

Is it on the market yet? If not, why not?

  • Jamano said on 11/20/2007:

Great idea. Pretty cool. I like it! :-)

  • Dan said on 11/20/2007:

    Very Nice, this handy

  • Shizzle said on 11/20/2007:

    It's Spinnin', It's Spinnin'!
Ha, i got an idea, if you cut serrations into the sides of a cd, you could use it as a buzz saw. you know, for self defense. They should make this for minidisks, that would be cool.

  • Mike said on 11/20/2007:

I agree with Poop Man. This article sucks, this is nothing more than some guy's design in photoshop, and the images have been circulating for 4 months. You'll never see this design in production, because nobody has even done the research to see if it would be practical to make - it's just a pretty drawing. Shitty blog, shitty post.

  • billyv said on 11/20/2007:

here i believe isa link to the site the person who wrote this article obtained his info from a.k.a. the fifth grader you decide by looking at this site is it real or still a fraud ....comments welcome......................

  • Sierra said on 11/20/2007:

Yes, there is the description of this concept written by the designer itself, but that and Techpin are not the only places where people discuss about this MP3/CD player. :)

  • Dana said on 11/20/2007:

Wow! This is the most unbelievable gadget I've ever seen!
    Amazing product!
You can find this product to buy it? Or is only a prototype?

  • Sierra said on 11/20/2007:

    Prototype

  • rockprata said on 11/20/2007:

Sierra's got a plan. I would get something small and handy if i could cop a cd from someone else with this.

  • rockprata said on 11/20/2007:

....by the way. I'm throwing the TM on the safety container that will be added to this product when it finally gets developed.

  • Seth said on 11/20/2007:

Cool concept I suppose but it wouldn't work very well, although if one comes out, I will buy it, stick in a cd and personally cut off The Poop Man's fingers one by one.

    Don't be an asshole.

    =D

  • bob said on 11/20/2007:

this is totally ridiculous, it would only only work if you could leave it on a desk or something, which would probably be near a pc anyway. this guy obviously didn't stupid design his whole life, or he would have realise the glaring flaws in designing such a stupid device.
and to make matters worse the article itself almost made me shoot myself. no jokes.

  • savagehenry said on 11/21/2007:

haha, great how ridiculous everyone thinks this is.

the REALLY funny bit is its just a knock off of an old product called Mr.Disc that was designed for playing RECORDS in the same way. no joke

  • optimistic one said on 11/21/2007:

I'v already seen this article a few weeks ago, written by someone else. It basically said the same thing, BUT it also included the fact that it rips the music from the CD to the MP3 player. This way you can hear an album of your buddies and rip it right there, and then go on your merry way. once you get home you can download it to your computer. BRILLIANT!!!!

  • fedd said on 11/21/2007:

WTF. so when the cd is playing is it just left out in the open spinning. so you cant put it in ur pocket or anything? GAY BALLS

  • Engineer said on 11/21/2007:

Why would it split out? You've got a spindle and you've got a laser on one arm, why would it split out like that with a second arm as opposed to just lifting and clamping on the first one? It's inefficient. But can it hold a saw blade?

  • someone said on 11/21/2007:

It will never go into production because of stupid people. I can see the lawsuits now from people who have hurt themselves on the spinning cd. With no case to keep the cd in while it's spinning, it's only a dream product.

  • imadoofus123 said on 11/22/2007:

if this could rip cds it would be really cool. otherwise it wouldn't be very practical but if you could just grab a cd, stick it in, and then you could listen...

  • Sick of opinions said on 11/22/2007:

God I hate people and their ridiculous opinions. The creator of this product has made something, all most of you have done is scribble ridiculous statements about practicality. Design isn't always practical, but you will always be an idiot. Make something or shut up! The internet has got to be more than just a sounding board for do-nothing morons, otherwise it should be destroyed.

  • Skiggs said on 11/22/2007:

I think it's an interesting INNOVATION. Something that gadget/audio enthusiasts would enjoy. It's something to talk about when a co-worker walks by your desk and sees it.

Notice it says CONCEPT at the top. Why would they list the specs if they haven't even started production on one.

Sure the writing may not be the best, but if you got the point didn't it accomplish it's goal! Do the world a favor, lock yourself in a box you cynic because you are poison.

  • Sierra said on 11/23/2007:

I had to write what the description of the designer. I can't come up with stupid specs that don't exist.
The device is simple and so are the specs. That's all the info i found about it.

  • B Positive ;) said on 11/23/2007:

    cool concept, love it...
Even better if you could rip CDs straight to the device ;)
Imagine friend shares music with you in car and you say I love it & I'll have it!

For the nay-sayers out there, the motor industry always comes up with "concept cars"...how many of those are ever made?

...also, sometimes companies want to push the design & engineering envelope to see if they can do the impossible! It helps with their R&D and development...specially if the do some fast prototyping ;)

  • dave c said on 11/24/2007:

I think that the CD player is not meant to be put into your pocket...More like set down on a table.
Now what would be cool, is WiFi access, and an ability to RIP CDs to MP3 format....great for piracy!

And exactly how would all the CDs get damaged?

    Do people think anymore?

  • Ok said on 11/25/2007:

To poop: When writing you should always write with your target audience in mind. Maybe it was written at a fifth grade level because they knew you'd be reading it.

Anyways, it's a decent concept. Why would you think it would damage the cd? It doesn't show someone carrying it. Doesn't show it in your pocket. It shows it laying flat on a surface.

I'll admit, this was totally ripped from another site, but oh well, that's the internet.

  • CheriAnn said on 11/27/2007:

(at the risk of having some overzealous internet bully jump me)

Yea, it looks neat at first, but what's the point of having something like that if you're just going to sit it on a table or desk? It's not very convenient at all- you'll still have to carry around your CD's and then you'd have to find a place that's isolated to sit so that the CD wouldn't get messed up from being bumped or moved.

Really, it's counter intuitive. You're just as well off to carry a Diskman and an MP3 player, when you're done working out the logistics.

I won't deny that the technology itself seems fairly impressive at first, but when you really think about it, it's not very practicle at all... Especially now with the Juke cell phones where you can target radios and listen to whatever for free, and the small laptops with crazy amounts of storage- where you can already have all your music awaiting you.

All that aside, yes, it's a great CONCEPT. "Innovation" and all. And yes, it looks really cool and Sci-Fi ish.

... As for being written by a fifth grader- well, I don't think I'd go that far, but there are certainly some basic grammatical errors that could have been adjusted with a quick proof reading.

  • lolerskates said on 11/27/2007:

This would also be a pain in the ass to make for the engineers that would need to really design it. This concept is garbage.

  • stupido said on 11/28/2007:

do you guys have ANY idea how fast that CD is spinning while being read? this gadget could kill people...

  • Sierra said on 11/28/2007:

Heh! Let's not think that far. :P

  • Benny said on 12/04/2007:

I'd buy one. Pretty cool idea.

  • Jaden said on 12/04/2007:

Actually, I think the ability to kill people with this device would be a plus! ;)

  • Brian Champness said on 12/04/2007:

I am afraid that this is a very silly invention; very silly indeed. Try again.

  • Suki said on 12/05/2007:

SONY made a similar product for LPs in the 80's. It never took off casue of the external factor increasing its flutter.

  • Kaziarl said on 12/09/2007:

It is a very neat idea, and like any concept it has problems. Even items that go from being a concept to being a product has bugs, look at Windows. I don't think it would be difficult to some how incorporate a protective case that is some how hidden or folded when it's not reading a disc. The concept would be pretty much the same, but this way you wouldn't have to worry about discs being messed up.

  • liz. said on 12/09/2007:

i so totaly agree with this. (what jaden said.)

  • Ron B said on 12/10/2007:

I actually had a portable CD-player like this in the early 90s. It was from SONY, and was meant for playing small 3-inch mini-CDs. While playing these, you couldn't see the CD - but when you pulled a switch under, you could play ordinary CDs, which would stick out. Almost like the pics above... It was actually pretty cool. You couldn't carry it around though, but was great bringing on vacation etc. And I didn't hurt myself while spinning ordinary CDs. ;-)

I think this would be a great concept, as long as you're able to also rip the CDs with the device. :-))

  • Chris said on 12/11/2007:

This article is horrible. Seems like it was written by a gradeschooler

  • Ryan said on 12/12/2007:

It probably was written by a 5th grader. Another thing is almost no one I know uses Cd's anymore and where would you fit something like that? Poor article, poor product. Sorry

  • stefano said on 12/18/2007:

It looks really cool but is the most useless and unpractical gadget I have ever seen.

  • Tyler said on 12/19/2007:

It looks like a very cool design but how many people still listen to cds.

  • I Am Not Here said on 01/31/2009:

i honestly think its a great idea.obviously you dont put it in your pocket while listening to a cd. and you dont just keep your cds in your pocket, you put in in a case somewhere, just like every other cd player. i would buy it.
