Stiletto shoes, platform shoes, GPS-enabled shoes

I don’t know how many of you have already heard about stiletto shoes or platform shoes, but I’m sure that the GPS-enabled footwear has crossed many minds up until this moment. Wouldn’t be a very good idea for each of you to know where your better half is when, I don’t know, he told you he’s going to see a friend he haven’t seen for so long or she said she’s going to the pharmacy and then to do her hair? You don’t believe a word he/she is saying and you’d give anything in order to track him/her down.

Well, a pair of shoes with GPS trackers would certainly solve your problem, right? Not stiletto shoes, not platform shoes. Not even his Nikes.

And your dream is about to come true, but not entirely. GTX Corporation and a shoe company called Aetrex have come up with a very good idea for those who need to keep an eye on patients with Alzheimer’s.

I don’t know how many of you what Alzheimer’s disease is, but here you have something to make things a little bit clearer. According to Wikipedia, “although each sufferer experiences Alzheimer’s in a unique way, there are many common symptoms”, symptoms that are visible to everyone. “The earliest observable symptoms are often mistakenly thought to be ‘age-related’ concerns, or manifestations of stress. In the early stages, the most commonly recognized symptom is memory loss, such as difficulty in remembering recently learned facts. […] As the disease advances, symptoms include confusion, irritability and aggression, mood swings, language breakdown, long-term memory loss, and the general withdrawal of the sufferer as their senses decline.”

These shoes are expected to help people around the patient, from relatives to doctors, to track him/her whenever he/she is tempted to wander around. Plans are made for the shoes to be released sometime by the end of 2010 and for them to be sold under a price of $200-$300. In addition, rumors say something about a monthly fee, of no more than $20, that will be paid by those who are willing to receive alerts.
