LG Philips LCD’s E-Paper Display to be Presented at CES
Posted by: Sierra Monica B. in Gadgets

One of the most spectacular innovations that will be presented at CES this year, is the world’s first 14.1-inch flexible color E-paper display developed by LG Philips LCD, one of the top suppliers of TFT-LCD panels.

The E-paper display has the same size as an A4 sheet of paper and is based on electronic ink from E-Ink.
It is able to produce up to 4,096 colors and has a viewing angle of 180 degrees, very necessary feature as the display can be bent.
The black and white version was launched back in May and the color display is using a substrate that arranges the TFTs (Thin-Film Transistors) on a metal foil instead of glass.
This principle permits it to come back to its original shape after being bent. The colors are displayed by the color filter coated onto the plastic substrate.
The secret of this innovation was the proprietary processing technology that minimizes panel deformation and in the same time prevents circuit structure change during high-temperature processes.
E-paper display is not only durable and flexible but also extremely energy efficient, because it uses power when changing the image on the screen, but also extremely thin, measuring just 300 micrometers thick.
According to recent statistics the flexible display market will grow into a USD 5.9 billion market by 2010, and will reach USD 12 billion by 2015.
