Kirlian Photography

My father is a bit of a pro when it comes to digital photography and he somehow managed to intoxicate me with this photo-syndrome. I kind of need to get a camera for myself, something like a DSLR. Or… maybe I’ll try Kirlian photographic machine.

This interesting concept relies on high voltage, contact print photographic technology. Sounds complicated? They say it’s pretty simple in fact. Sheet film is placed on top of a metal plate, called the discharge or film plate. You then place the object to photograph on top of the film and if the object to be photographed is inanimate, such as a coin for example, a ground is connected to the object. I can’t really figure out what that “ground†means but here is a diagram that’ll hopefully make more sense for you.

Here comes the best part. High voltage is applied for a fraction of a second to the plate in order make an exposure. The corona discharge between the object and discharge plate passes through and is recorded onto the film. When the exposed film is developed…. voila! You got a Kirlian photo.
Check out the official page for some more info on the physical processes involved in the Kirlian photographic process.
