How To Be The Coolest Goth

A very good place to start in this research is the internet but don't forget that if you really do not like it and enjoy other types of music you should listen to them. It is not an enforcement of all the features of the culture. You may like just the music and not the clothes, or viceversa but either way around you do not have to be forced into liking something just because it would be cool. In my opinion, how to be the coolest Goth regards freedom of choice on any grounds.

In this culture, the clothes do matter because fashion style is a very big part of a Goth's life. You may want to let other Gothic followers that you like the style and embrace it but remember that if you do not want to dress up all the time it is not that bad. You should do a little research on this topic as well and you shall find a lot of sites and do keep in mind that dressing Goth is not all about dressing in black. There are many styles of fashion to the Goth subculture but the main ones are the Victorian Romantic Goth style and the Bat cave Death rock 80s style.

A more popular style that made its place into the Goth fashion culture is the Gothic Lolita. You do not want to use a face paint costume mix of you want a white complexion but a mix of a lighter foundation with the regular foundation that will match your true skin color, because it will look awful. The white skin feature is not a must because you can rock this style any color of skin that you mat have. Try to make your own look and do not copy others, make it personal and unique combining elements that you may see in different image styles. If one day your all miss sunshine and the next day you will be the great Goth queen, people may think that you are doing this only fro the trend and that you are not genuine so a good advice is to ease into such a new look.

You may find a lot of articles on the how to dress Goth or how to be the coolest Goth but remember as long as you don't feel comfortable in what you are doing or wearing means that you are doing it only for the trend and that this culture is not for you. You do not have to force yourself into linking something. If you are interested it will be easy to learn facts about the history of the Goth culture and if you do not know something you should not feel embarrassed because no one knows them all. There are many suggested authors for the literature part like Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker, Mary Shelley, Lord Byron, William Faulkner, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Anne Rice, Christopher Marlowe, Ellen Schreiber, Storm Constantine, The Bronte Sisters and Melissa Marr.

You do not have to limit yourself to these authors because there are many wonderful books out there. These are merely the top authors for the Goth subculture and be sure that the coolest Goth has a collection of them back home. Another style, that suite this culture, is the sci-fi or the fantasy literature, and one of my personal favorites. But do keep in mind the fact that of you do read these books and do not like them it would not make you Goth. This is a feeling, a style and a nature.
The attitude is another main feature to this culture and remember that there are many judgmental people out there. Try to be polite and considerate towards other people and of you think that violence or being depressed will make you a cool Goth then think again. Try to accept the differences that may appear between you and others and be very accepting. If you do your research right you will find out that many artists, musicians, writers are Goths because individuality and creativity are a very big part of this culture.
If you do like the music then try a club but be prepared to have different experiences like in the normal clubs. These places are where Goth followers come and share their emotions and opinions about many subjects like the modern society for example. Many topics are considered taboo so do not be ashamed or think that they are inappropriate, just try to think freely and nonjudgmental and if you still do not have a great time, it's ok. It just means that this scene is not for you. You may want to try the magazines that you can buy and read in the comfort if your home. Morbid Outlook, Asleep by Dawn. Drop Dead, or Gothic Beauty are the main themed magazines that you will find on news stands or can subscribe online.

Remember that the main thing that we are trying to stress out in this article is the fact that if your interest is genuine these things will come natural. You will become the coolest Goth and be into Goth music, because there are many good bands out there, or get confident in your style and the new way you like to dress, live and think. You will meet many people which will be Goth if you are opened up and you will do what you believe in not be forced by the pressures of the group or the culture.
Although many people consider a Goth instantly a freak it has been shown that the majorities of the followers are very respectful towards others and really does not care about what other judgmental people think, because this is a narrow and limited way of thinking. This style also encourages academically performances, Goths liking very much to read and many of the important figures in the world were Goths. This culture is not about being cooler, or being a rebel that will curse excessively. It's a way of life and thinking that is very liberating and I really hope that people in the future will embrace at least the way of thinking, this changing a lot in the world.

Hi,
I am a very open minded person and love to hear others' opinions. I love the style of goths and definitely "fit the bill". How can I find others if I dont dress gothic or hang out in clubs? Although I myself am very open minded my family and lifestyle is not. I am a teenager living under my parents roof.( I am into doing legal things although I do question the law by which I abide.)
Are there others my age in Toronto and any way i would be able to find others like me?

Hey Mimi,
as you found out, the internet is at your command. For example, try a forum or a site like vampirefreaks (which I don't know myself btw). You may not immediatly find new friends who also turn out to be your neighbours, but you can meet nice people from all over the world.
Also, you could try to enthousiast one of your friends for goth subculture. And next, step up to goth people you meet at school, in the streets, supermarket or where ever. Most of them wil definitelly be up for a talk. But well, goths are like normal people - there're very nice ones and jerks too. You don't have to dress in black or in shocking clothes; actually, I've got friends who die their hair, shave it, wear piercings, top hats and corsets and still are befriended with others who are best described as happy, pink and hyperactive.
Good luck!^^
