How far fashion can go?

Now really! I just couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw such an outrageous invention the human mind could conceive. Not to mention the fact that my eyes hurt, due to my excessively developed spirit of solidarity and I felt them drowning in the tears of the most sincere empathy for whoever would dare to wear such a jewel.
Maybe it’s me. Maybe I do not have the rudimental resources which are necessary for my brain to understand fashion and the fact that imagination has no boundaries whatsoever. I have never enjoyed that exaggerated “artistic” sense of those who were wearing all kinds of rings on their toes, little Swarovski crystals on their teeth, tattoos or piercings.

Surprisingly or not (I really don’t know if my stupefaction is justified in these modern times we live in, when anything is quite… possible) the picture you’re looking at shows you a piece of jewelery for your eyeball. The so-called “Eye Jewellery Project” designed by artist Eric Klarenbeek implies a medical wire threaded through some crystals attached to a contact lens and is made to imitate tears running permanently on a cheek. It sounds and looks so very painful, if you ask me, and in a certain extent even dangerous.

The jewel is to be found in The Wonder Room at Selfridges department store in London where an exhibition of jewellery influenced by the natural world, described as “a heady mix of taxidermy, genetic-engineered jewellery and natural pearls”, is hosted. The very ingenious artist, Eric Klarenbeek, took seriously into consideration the exploration of the potential of jewellery as body parts and converted it into a hobby. Artificial objects that we carry with us and almost become a part of us have always intrigued the artist. Therefore, he tries to make a fusion of what’s real and what’s unreal and to blur the transition between what we are and how we might improve our being.
Graduated from The Design Academy of Eindhoven in 2003, his projects, such as The Floating Light, Poekie and The Eye Jewellery Project have been featured in the media worldwide and made people talk about him. When Klarenbeek was asked on a video he posted on the project about the risks someone would come up against if a well-meaning person tugged on the line, he said that “It just falls out… or in worst case, the wire might break”.

But you know what? The thing is that you don’t have to be the member of an African tribe to be anxious about such a piece of jewellery. I could easily think of some persons desperate to achieve The Eye Jewellery as long as the status of genuine trend-setter will be widely recognized. I’ll stick to “fashionably sensitive”, thanks.

Can't help myself to comment on this. I personally like subtle sparkling jewels on the human body and small rings too, but wouldn't it be simpler and worry-free if you'd just stick a Swarovski stone on your cheek instead of getting complicated with contact lenses, threads and that thing hanging from your eye?!

As far as i'm concerned nothing could ever compete such a jewel. Unless maybe a Swarovski stone implanted directly in the cornea. Oh my god!

Just what I was saying. It begins with contact lenses. And the next step is crystal attached to the human eye. Ouch!

Honest to God, my eyes were a little watery after looking at these pictures. Now I need a tissue.

I suppose it's just a matter of taste. I'd bet all my money on the fact that there are people enjoying these pieces of jewelery.
Anyways, this is another way of imitating tears, don't you think so? Looking at these pictures... Therefore... the project accomplished its mission, right?
