Frozen iMacs, Anyone?

Frozen iMacs, Anyone?

Just a few days after Apple's software updates started to cause serious problems to lots of iPhones all over the world, it seems another one of their products is plagued by problems. This time, we're talking about the iMac, and the problem is that users are complaining about sudden freezes which don't have any other solution yet, apart from a system reboot...

An Usual iMac

User reports on Apple's official support forums state that the new generation of iMacs don't actually freeze, but while programs continue to run, it becomes impossible to interact with the system using the keyboard or the mouse. To make the problem even stranger than it is, the mouse cursor moves, but you can't perform any action with it, and some keys also work, like CapsLock.

According to AppleInsider, "The issue appears to be related to the ATI Radeon HD graphics hardware and its drivers, but has proven unpredictable.", and there's no generally reproductible pattern that triggers the freeze. In the same article, I was able to find out that AppleInsider's new iMac has the same problem, but it appeared only after installing a software update, labeled 1.1.

It's really a pity to see such a thing happening, especially since I had a previous experience with an older iMac G5, that managed to impress me with its reliability and speed. I don't know what's going to happen next, but it seems Apple's software engineers must find a solution, and fast, because the latest software updates seem to be one of the worst in the history of the company, when thinking about their impact on the hardware. Just think twice before applying any update to your Mac OS, it seems now it's better to sit back and wait to see what happens to the others...
