Ergonomic Seat Design Based on Robotic Technology

By the next spring you will start feeling very comfortable in your seats at the office, thanks to a new technology that enables ergonomic seat design, developed by Oki Electric Industry and Okamura Corporation. Oki is known as Japan’s top telecommunications manufacturer, while Okamura is specialized in office furniture and provides its solutions in more than 50 countries.

The collaboration resulted in the launching of the world’s first seating using muscular mechanism based on Oki’s robotic technology, which enables a new type of seating with the highest ergonomics degree, fitting the human body, following the movement from the seating and as the user is standing up.

“OKI’s robotic technology is based on studies of human movement and leverages new mechanisms for applications in the future technology of mechatronics. By applying this technology for human interfaces, we believe we can offer new values to products,” said Yutaka Asai, Chief Technology Officer at OKI. “After thorough discussion, OKI focused on a situation where a child is held by the parent on the lap – that is, to develop a seat that can embrace the sitter through robotic technology based on an understanding of the human skeletal structure and muscular mechanisms. Adopting the very human concept of ’embrace and wrap,‘ OKI and Okamura decided to develop the concept jointly.”

Oki’s Robot Leg functions based on the natural human movement, including factors like the bone structure and muscular mechanisms, while the upper part of the seat features a newly developed carbon frame and seating cushion shape.
Practically, while you sit on it, you feel like if the seat is wrapped around you from the back. As you are standing up, the seat rises up slightly, assisting you to a natural position.

Until May 2009, when the new models based on this ergonomic seat design will be available on the market, I invite you to check these unique seat models designed by Okamura.
