icon15.pngHow often do you find yourself overwhelmed by the updates you forgot to perform on your computer? I am not talking about the software updates of your operating system that can be performed automatically, or manually, as you wish...or even not at all, if that's your will. What I have in mind is something that's often the cause of various issues with our computers, yet too many of us don't give proper attention to - drivers.

From some multimedia keyboards to various external storage devices, we need to have the latest drivers installed on our system to avoid problems. But we all have better things to do than check for the latest updates, so today I'll tell you about Driver Detective, a program that can take care of this task for us...

Setup

Coming inside a 4.8MB setup package, Driver Detective 6 is very easy to install, and there's nothing special to be mentioned about this part. There is no Google Toolbar or Desktop Search to install or not, no email trial registration, only a license agreement that you should read (but nobody does, in most cases), and some "Next" buttons to press, as usual.

Interface

driverdetective_6_004.pngAs you can see in the screenshot to the left, even the message boxes have the "Wow! factor", and the toolbar that can be found inside the main window has six icons with obvious functions, from Register to Vista Ready? and Help. Although a lot of people have problems installing some drivers, I am sure that using Driver Detective will be a pleasure for all.

Features

When the program opens for the first time, you have to choose the Manufacturer, Model and Family of your computer, if you own a brand name PC, or simply check Unknown, for a custom build.

The next natural step is to press the Scan Now button and wait for this software detective to gather all the information it needs about your system's hardware and software.

The good part is that once the previous operation is complete, you can download latest drivers for your system...or you should, because the trial version is very limited. You won't be able to download drivers or change the program's settings.

Well, at least the Vista Ready? tool is working. As its name says, this tool can be used to check if your computer is capable of running Windows Vista using the classic interface, as well as using the new Aero one(system requirements for Aero are pretty high, when compared to the basic Vista interface). These being said, your time has come to grab this interesting download, and mine, to draw the conclusions.

The Good

Driver Detective is a program that looks great and can save you a lot of time. It has access to a huge drivers database and is very easy to use.

The Bad

The trial version is useless, when considering the goal of the full program. Also, I think the price is just..."a little big".

Conclusion

If you're one of those who hate looking for drivers in the strangest places, you won't have to leave any web site untouched until finding the latest ones your computer needs. All you have to do is grab Driver Detective and let it do this job for you, so if you have the money, go ahead and make a smart buy!

I have found this program to be a complete waste of time. It is a an expensive piece of junk. It appears to run alright until you try and and download and install the drivers that it claims to be updating. If you manage to actually install a new driver, you will be told that your existing driver is a later version than the one provided by Driver Detective. Support is non existing nor do they even bother to acknowledge your request for assistance.

  • Richard said on 06/21/2008:

Take care with this. I bought it and would have been in big trouble had it not been for Kaspersky keeping an eye on what was going on. One driver (at least) was infected with the 'Invader' virus. Don't use this unless you have a good security system installed.

  • Sierra said on 06/22/2008:

Did you get it from the official provider?

  • KodrutZ said on 06/22/2008:

Try to scan the file Kaspersky claims to be infected at www.virustotal.com. All antiviruses provide fake alarms sometimes, and Kaspersky is no exception. Even more, if that driver is really infected, this is the fault of the hardware manufacturer for allowing it to slip onto its website, and not Driver Detective's.

  • laurelady said on 06/26/2008:

The software does not seem to have an uninstall feature and when I went to try and unstall it from my control panel, it is not listed. Fishy to me. Wouldn't risk it, I still can't get it off my computer

  • laurelady said on 06/26/2008:

double checked and there's no uninstall for this software and support is useless

  • KodrutZ said on 06/26/2008:

Did you try to simply go to its folder and look for Uninstall.exe, or in the Start>Programs>Driver Detective folder, where a link to the Uninstall program should be available? I know I installed it, I played with it, and then I removed it, so it's impossible to have a different behavior on your computer!

  • tonyh said on 07/16/2008:

i agree...what a waste of my money. it sounds great at first until you have to do all the leg work to download the drivers it detected as being out of date. customer service is non existant and i'm disputing my payment with paypal. the program does not even correct itself when a driver has been properly installed.

  • Sierra said on 07/16/2008:

Thanks for telling us too, tonyh!

  • Treviboy said on 07/21/2008:

If they go to a lot of trouble making you think it's a FREE trial download and then hit you up for 30 odd bucks before you can do anything then I don't trust them. Neither should you. Misleading from the start, dishonest later on I'll bet.

  • seamus said on 07/28/2008:

what an incisive comment, right on! hear hear etc.

  • KodrutZ said on 07/28/2008:

Free trial is exactly what that means - limited features/time of use, pay to fully unlock the software. I think you got it all wrong, Treviboy. I don't like very limited trial versions, but that doesn't mean "free trial" is a lie, as long as you can download, install and run the software! ;)

  • Maximus_PK said on 07/31/2008:

I have the same problem as laurelady, the program doesn t have an uninstall in my control panel either.Another marketing ploy of making it harder for most people to uninstall therefore more likely that you will go ahead and buy it.I wouldn t buy it for that reason alone.

  • Maximus_PK said on 07/31/2008:

Actually I take back what I said as I have found Driver Detective in my control panel its registry booster that won t allow me to uninstall it,after typing in remove sofware it says it is anable to do so...

  • Sierra said on 07/31/2008:

I am trying to contact them regarding to your problems, and will check back to you after I'll receive the reply.

  • Sierra said on 08/01/2008:

I've redirected your comments to Mike Hurd, the owner of Driver Detective. He said he will provide you with the right solutions for your problems.

  • Treviboy said on 08/08/2008:

    No KodrutZ, you are wrong.
A free trial means a trial of the whole program at no fee. If I want to buy a car I don't make do with looking at it in the yard and then pay to take it for a test drive. A possibly spurious check of my drivers with nothing afterwards is not a free trial. If you think it is then I have a Grand Canyon I'd like to sell you.
You attitude makes you a poor consumer.
    My original posting stands.

  • Sierra said on 08/08/2008:

Trial means you can try it for free with no feature limitations, so it should be called a demo instead.

  • Dave Jonston said on 08/09/2008:

I've been using Drivers Detective for 6 months now, and I'm pretty happy with it. My Toshiba laptop came with Vista Basic, which turned out to a very crappy OS, so I downgraded to XP -- only to find out Toshiba doesn't list any XP-compatible LAN or sound drivers for this lappy on their site. So for me this proggy was a godsend, it found XP compatible drivers for me in like 5 minutes.

BTW, I bought this software with a 30% discount coupon here:

    http://bestpricepicker.com/lowest-price-discount-coupon-driver-detective_15691-1.html

(I've nothing to do with this site, just posting if anyone's interested.)

  • Cezar said on 08/09/2008:

Yes, it's true. I've encountered the same problems as you. But I didn't switched back to WinXP because I hate WinXP now. The program did it's job very well for me either.

  • T Farrar said on 08/16/2008:

It is worthless it has no drivers that you cant get yourself and it will install older versions of drivers or try to if windows doesnt warn you you are trying to do so i wish I had never downloaded it and would like to have my $30 instead.

  • hrbass said on 08/26/2008:

I couldn't agree more. I was close to purchasing this until I read all of the blog. Thanks guys for posting. I feel the same way. If it is a free trial, it should at least give you all it's got for at least one try. Too much crap on the market and my money is hard to come by....HRB

  • Sierra Monica B. said on 08/27/2008:

What does "free trial" mean for you? To be able to scan and update with all those drivers for free? What will the software developer earn from this?

  • laurelady said on 08/27/2008:

Yes I tried Start>Programs>Driver Detective folder, where a link to the Uninstall program should be available but it's not there. All that shows is the name of the software. Click on it and the program starts. It asked me to do a software update -- I clicked "no" and it immediately shut down. Any suggestions?

  • KodrutZ said on 08/27/2008:

Try going to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and find Driver Detective. You should be able to uninstall it from there. Good luck! ;)

Driver dectective is a complete ripoff. It did nothing for us and charged us 167.44 instead of the cost of the download program of $39.99. Which by the way was suppose to be $9.99. I have been trying to find someway to contact them and of course there is no way to do that. What to do now? The phone for them on our bank account is not complete and we have no way getting an explanation or refund. This is total fraud. I am going to report to the police department this scam.

  • Steve Mutchler said on 09/28/2008:

Well...I was rebuilding a clients HP Pavilion 751n...XP loaded and I was missing audio and video drivers...Went to the HP site, and the drivers were not available...

Started looking around and found this Driver Detective...I have several driver detection type of utiliites, but I don't think I have ever seen this particular Driver Detective before...but I downloaded it and it found my 2 drivers...but I gotta pay $29.95 to get the drivers...Ok...I Paypal'ed it...$30 bucks is not that much and I usually pay the fee if I like the program...

Driver Detective downloaded and installed the 2 drivers no problem...

Afterwards, I was googling around and found this website, and after reading all the comments, I got to thinking I got screwed...

So, went into Add/Remove and found I could uninstall Driver Detective...
I installed my usual AS/AV...Webroot Spysweeper with Antivirus...and after a full scan it found nothing...So then I removed the HD, and slaved it to a test machine that I run Kaspersky on, and again came up clean...

After I uninstalled Driver Detective, I rebooted the HP, checked Device Manager, make sure the drivers were still there and not dependent on Driver Dective remaining in the system, and both drivers were still there...

So...I would have to say, Driver Detective worked for me, as advertised, it did the job I expected it to do...

Now, where I might have an issue, their site says that you can install it on 10 computers...since I do a lot of rebuilding of various computer types...occasionally I have some difficulty finding drivers...If I can continously install the program, get my drivers, uninstall it....then move on to the next computer when I need Device Driver...and go the through the same install, get drivers, uninstall...I will be a happy camper...

Don'T get it, I agree I just lost my money dealing with these guys, I wrote 2 emails to driver detective headquarters, you noticed I didn't even bother to capitalize their name. They didn't even bother to respond to my e-mails and when I call them the operator doesn't even sound real.. These guys are a rip off to me until they prove themselves other wise.

  • La Sonya Farr said on 10/19/2008:

I want a refund on this service. No is responding, and it's been a week! I'm getting a blue screen now because of this product. Please advise on how to get a refund.

  • Sierra said on 10/19/2008:

Did you call the firm at the number displayed here http://www.drivershq.com/Contact.aspx ?
In all countries there are Customer Protection Departments. Where I live I can call them at any time and someone will come with me at the store to solve the problem within minutes. Here usually you get the refund immediately after calling this department.
Check the address on that page and then call the Customer Protection Department from where you live to ask for help or instructions.
    Keep us up to date.

  • Henry said on 10/20/2008:

I too got rip-off by these people used the software and it told me I have to update some of my drivers so I paid for this product did what I suppose to do updated my driver and still same the same thing drivers need to be updated check the history to see if drivers were updated and only three of the fifteen were updated and the drivers that were updated were the same drivers I updated from the manufacturer drivers download area what a bunch of crooks contacted them right for a refund and told about this and still haven't heard from them yet and will be filing a claim against this company for false advertisement so anyone even thinking about trying this software just read these statements because they don't stand by there product.

  • Sierra said on 10/20/2008:

Henry, could you tell us where will you fill the claim? What is the name of the authority and where do you live?

  • LHorne said on 10/22/2008:

I just got ripped by downloading the free trial and then thinking I was going to purchase the program through paypal for 9.99. Before I even know what had happened, I see that I got popped for 39.99. I immediately searched for dd scam because I knew I had been "had". I am SOOOO kicking myself in the butt for being stupid. I always check for scams, but I figured what the heck, 10 bucks for the driver I need for my printer since I can't find the cd - OK.

I just purchased a new desktop with Vista. The program did download the HP printer driver I needed and it works beautifully...but I would have rather looked it up myself and downloaded it from the HP site for FREEEEEEEE!!!!!!

    ARGHHHHHHH at myself!!!

  • Codrut Nistor said on 10/22/2008:

Lesson for the future - ALWAYS read the amount at least 3 times before paying with PayPal(or any other method, obviously)!!!

  • ksc said on 10/26/2008:

Thanks to all for taking the time to post. I did not continue on with the purchase and apparently should be glad.

I was able to uninstall via the control panel with no difficulties, uninstall ran without any problems. Finally found the driver I was looking for, acutally only took about twenty minutes so I guess I paid myself 90 bucks.

  • D. Cassidy said on 11/01/2008:

This software doesn't do what it says it can do. Tried to get support and no one responds like it says it will. Be care full with some drivers. Things can only get worse. It may work for brand name computers. Not much help for computers you build from bottom up. Asked for refund from them and PayPal. This maybe a GOTCHA.

I went to ASK and looked for revues on the product and came across your post statement, and am I glad that I came across it when I did.
You helped save my bacon, and I thank you for taking the time to write your revue on this product.

IN MY EXPERIENCE, DRIVER DETECTIVE IS A DEFINITE RIP-OFF.

UNFORTUNATELY FOR ME, THE 30 DAY PERIOD HAD ALREADY PASSED BEFORE I REALIZED JUST HOW INEFFECTIVE THEIR PROGRAM IS, CONTRARY TO THEIR ADVERTISEMENT.

CONSQUENTLY I COULD NOT ASK FOR A REFUND.

IN EACH INSTANCE WHERE I HAD A PROBLEM WITH THEIR UPDATE, I WOULD CONTACT THEIR TECH HELP BUT TO NO AVAIL.

IN FACT THERE WAS NEVER EVEN AN ATTEMPT TO ACKNOWLEDGE MY CONCERN, WHICH WOULD EXPLAIN WHY AND HOW THE 30 DAY PASSED. (I WAS WAITING FOR A REPLY THAT NEVER HAPPENED)

DO YOURSELF A FAVOR, SAVE YOUR MONEY AND STAY AWAY FROM THEM.

I agree that this software is essentially useless. At one time it showd I had 3 drivers out of date (after installing? others). Now it's up to 5, and no matter what, they won't download or install. Support on this product is absolutely nonexistent. I think I got one reply that referred me to the website...BFD...that's USELESS.
As far as I'm concerned it is junk and money NOT well spent.

  • Kim Watkins said on 11/15/2008:

Not only did this product continually agonize me, their support team does not respond. Never have I gotten any useful reply from them, only to re-install. Sometimes I get no reply at all. I lost my wireless local network and internet connections, including the driver software after downloading an update from driver detective's application. The driver and connection vanished with no sign of it ever existing. I got on my laptop and contacted them via the support address listed under the phrase, "We're always here for you," and got nothing, not even confirmation of receiving my request for help. It took me all day to get my computer connected again. A day and a half later, still, no word from the support team.

I just uninstalled the whole nightmare of a program and called it a $30 lesson in what happens if you download and purchase software without reading reviews first.

Bad Software... Shame on any site that advertises or recommends this product. I can't trust those resourses anymore.

I purchased the program in late 06, at the lime there was no number of licenses, I purchased an unlimited membership for 29.95. Since that time a limit of 10 licenses has been added. This product has had restrictions put on it since I bought it. When I contact the owner of the company Mike Hurd (mikehurd@drivershq.com), I was initially given 4 more licenses. When I e-mailed him an electronic copy of the receipt, his response was "Unlimited downloads not computers." ......Of course the downloads are unlimited, they are provided for free from the manufactures.
I reformat my 3 machines every 8 months or so. When I bought the program I was looking for something that had no restrictions once bought....I thought I had found it. I guess things changed.

Hi, I've downloaded and installed unlocked,

I find that there is a total lack of information when something doesn't work which is one of the most annoying things in life (for me)

I've read over and over again on your site, Right click the program file, then select unlocker, I CAN NOT SELECT UNLOCK BECAUSE "UNLOCK" DOESN'T APPEAR.

Now I'm also a bit clueless about driver updates, I don't know what it does so I don't really want to upgrade, especially when I don't have "legit" Microsoft software.

Also I'm left with a program that is supposed to help me delete locked virus files, but doesn't actually work (I can't select what isn't there), or give ANY information in the NECESSARY places

  • Paco said on 11/26/2008:

    Hi guys:
I just downloaded the Driver Detective, free trial, so I have paid nothing and I won't. I took a look at it and didn't became convinced. After that I read your blogs, so I thought it is not worth what they say.

Hence, a few minutes ago, I was able to remove it, just by going through START > CONTROL PANEL > ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS > select DRIVER DETECTIVE > I clicked on ADD/ REMOVE; the "Install Wizard" opened up, there I found two options: REPAIR and REMOVE. Therefore, I gave a click on the "remove" option and it was completely removed. As you know it'd be advisable to restart your PC.

Hope it will work for those of you who need or want to get rid of it.

  • Dennis said on 12/02/2008:

The makers of “Driver Detective” promote this program to be an automated bullet proof way of keeping driver software on any computer up to date without requiring the computer owner/operator to have any technological expertise. I am disputing the purchase of “Driver Detective” on the grounds the product is not what the seller promoted it to be. After purchasing it, I found it difficult contacting support until I filed a complaint with PayPal and Safe Cart. Then I discovered that the technologically challenged needed to take a virtual training course before they could actually use the program.

To do what the program promised to do it had to take an inventory of the system drivers, compare the inventory to a data base of updated drivers, determine if the updated drivers were compatible with the operating system and, if there are no compatibility issues, download and install the newer drivers. All of this needed to be done without any interaction with the technologically challenged computer operator.

The program does not do this and cannot be used effectively unless the operator first takes a virtual training course which will teach them how to perform these tasks themselves.

Thus, what the promoter of “Driver Detective” is actually selling is a computer training course, not a software program which eliminates the need for taking such a course. This program might be useful for those who build and sell computers for a living, it is not for the technologically challenged. Proof of this is found in the long list of complaints found on this site.

This program is very suspicious. I was wary at first and found it odd that it took so long to install. Looking at the changes this made to the process threads and the structure of permissions I was alarmed by how much this program had reconstituted the processing trees connected with liveupdate service. So much in fact that my Internet connection is automatically flooded with a transport of packets in both directions everytime I boot up.
There is no uninstall. Even when I activated a restore point to take my pc back before installation, the heavy traffic continues.
I have killed the offending servicehost but there is still internet activity while my pc is idle

Like some other I was considering purchasing this pdct until researching. Seems the Customer Support is non-existant and they are using the first rule of aquisition #1. "Once you have their money never give it back!"
I've been ripped off before and this looks like another attempt to do the same. Promising the world and delivering defective pdct.
Oh yea! that free trial means I can actually try it to see if it actually updates drivers not read my driver list and then posting saying some are out of date. Hell, I knew that so their demo it worthless since it only told me what I already know. I'm not going to pay them for that!

They sent me an email that I have to un-install all my driver (what the f$ck ??) and then re-installl them with their program.
What???? I go through and un-install all my drivers and then trust them to reinstall correct ones??? NO FRIGGIN WAY....

Tried at least ten times to download and install the driver fixes with no success.
Re-ran scan a dozen times and each time tried unsuccessfully to download the fix.
Decided to uninstall and re-install the DD program.
Uninstall went fine. Then tried to access my account to download DD again. Couldn't log in. No record of my account or email. No information on how to contact customer service.
I've contacted Amex and asked them to hold payment. Can't do that. Have to wait 'til the charge has been paid and posted and then request an investigation...with no guarantee I'll be credited for the payment by DD. WHAT A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY!!!!!!

This is a copy of an email sent to "safe"cart, the parent of dd. Should be informative to techpin as well as viewers:

Today I downloaded driver detective from techpin.com that carries a glowing review of your product along with a "discounted" link to your registration page. After registering, I notice, in RED, that my account has been charged $39.90 - not the advertised price of $29.95 (which seems exorbitant at that!).

Stupid me. In my rush, I neglected to complete my research by reading the comments from others on the tech site.

From what I've read, I shouldn't expect much of a response from you; but considering myself a fair person, I thought I'd start here before I take further action. I don't even dare risk more by actually using your product - from what I've read.

    I expect a full refund.

  • Dan M said on 01/07/2009:

On further review of mailed receipts from safecart, I see this web page is part of the problem with DD. The link on this page automatically adds the 2 year extension for $9.95, which raises the "discounted" price of $29.95 to $39.90!!

    Just another ripoff.

Both sites should have Fraud Alerts and brought to justice!

Stay away from driver detective, it's a scam! Driver Detective is a scum bag company that does not respond to complaints and does not refund money. I HAVE SEEN NIGHTMARE STORIES ABOUT COMPUTER PROBLEMS FROM THEIR SOFTWARE. If you see something positive about this software it was probably written by them! I was charged $39.90 when it appeared I would be charged $9.95. they did not have a charge review/confermation page so I didn't see how much they were charging. I did get a refund after a long fight with them and Paypal and only after I threatened to report them to IC3 (I'm still going to). Paypal is now in bed with Safecart and their policy is to not refund any downloadable software. NEVER USE PAYPAL OUTSIDE OF EBAY. IT MAY SEEM EASIER THAN ENTERING YOUR CC # BUT TRUST ME IT'S WORTH THE EXTRA TIME. PAYPAL DOES NOT PROTECT CONSUMERS THE WAY VISA/MASTERCARD DOES. • Dan M said on 01/09/2009:

In response to Sierra - my problem with techpin is they continue to profit from a software producer that has some very OBVIOUS and serious predatory practices. Do you think there exists a mass conspiracy effort by the vast number of victims reporting their experienes with DD all over the WWW?

As for my previous comments about DD, I attempted to express my personal experience with this transaction. For DD's "Truth" Team post above: Where have you been?! To acuse me of "STARTING , , , a denigration campaign" on Jan 1, 2009 when the negative reviews of DD on this site alone began on 10/16/2007 is ludicrous! That "you" are not paying attention is evident by your stating the date of my post erroneously. I've wasted all my time with this in a little over 24 hours!

Returning to Sierra: The only way I know of sending you screenshots of supposedly erroneous DD registration pages is to RE-register with some phony info just to access them.
I won't do that. Besides, I don't know what that would prove? I'm positive I did not opt for the 2 year extended license of DD. I was sceptical about getting it FREE.

So . . . the story continues. I hope I've learned another lesson. Otherwise, the time I've wasted over this transaction will have truly been WASTED.

  • Dan M said on 01/09/2009:

Addendum to above: In re-reading post above from Codrut 10/22/08 - . . ."ALWAYS read the amount at least 3 times before paying with PayPal(or any other method, obviously)"

My experience: I , rather thoughtlessly, paid with PayPal. The first indication that the final price owed DD was presented at the top of a confirmation page. No transfer to PayPal. No other options. I've never encountered this before. I transfered to my PP account and there it was - - I HAD agreed to send DD $39.90. No Ifs, Ands, or But-t-t-t-s! I'm stuck with it. All I did was click on the PayPal sign and transaction complete.

It's a little difficult to determine what irks me the most. Is it the maliciously deceptive format that gives the impression you are paying $9.95 and then being ZAPPED for $39.99 before you can review your purchase agreement? Or is it the "Hit and Miss" software that works like it was glued together? My machine has rejected 2 of the 4 recommended driver updates. The other 2 were already on my machine. I dare not attempt to download and install any of the 'serious' drivers for fear of irreversible damage to my computer. Yes, I have demanded a full and complete refund, and I WILL get it. At 11:04 PM I receive two messages: one from Safecart Payments, the other from PayPal; both inform me of my purchase price refund. I check my balance on PP, and, whalla! - my account bal. reads $39.90 - the exact amount I initially "lost" to DD. Oh, how I wished I had seen this before I bought this useless piece of crap. Where I accessed it, it did promise a 30 day free trial. After scanning, it ask if I wanted to fix drivers and I said sure. It went to buy the utility. I'm 61 and I really should have know better (classic bait and switch), but I bought it because I had lost wireless connection for my laptop. I'm not a computer expert, but I have been learning since I got this laptop. Well, it had turned up a large list of out of date drivers, and one missing. When I went to download the drivers, it did not download all, because it could not find the missing one. You can't install a lot of the drivers; when you open them all you get is the file location and files on your computer, not way to install. They want you to go thru a compicated crazy process to install the chipset family drivers so the driver detective will be able to tell that you have installed them???? That is simple to use? I don't think so.
After a couple of hours of trying to use this crazy thing. I looked around in the control panel, clicked on device manager and lo and behold, it show two drivers that needed repair. I clicked they installed instantly and I had wireless connection again. Oh, and one was the one driver detective could not find!!
Then my neighbors son was in for a visit, and was talking to them outside. He came in, messed with my laptop for a bit, and informed me that all my drivers were fully up to date. After he left, just for a lark, I had driver detective scan again and guess what the same results as before; still showed the 17 out of date and the 1 missing.
As I said, not an expert, but I believe it has to be the most useless product ever.

Thanks Dan M for the info. I'll do that. I have filed with PayPal. Customer service at driver detective did answer my email. They wanted me to run a scan, send the info to them, explain the problem with each driver download, blah blah blah. I let them know I had already uninstalled their useless piece of crap, and if I had not I would not jump thru their crazy hoops while they pretended they were trying to help me. I also let them know the scans return false results, that's why the so called up dates won't install: they are already updated.
Has anyone ever got a person on the phone when they called the number they list? That's why I thought there might be another number if they were talking to a real person instead of an automated thing that takes you in circles and then disconnects.

I certainly don't want to prematurely congratulate myself, but it appears I've gotten rid of the Evil Bastard, which goes by many names, including Satin and Driver Detective.

As I said I'd tried all sorts of things. My computer savy buddy suggested Prevx, but also said he thought I might have to reinstall all my programs to get rid of it.

I purchased Prevx CSI. Before doing so I read everything I could find on Prevx to try to make sure I wasn't getting another POS and so I'd know how to use it and which version to buy (of the Prevx products). As far as I can tell so far that did the trick.

I also got "upgraded" (automatically, not by my request, but I signed up for Microsoft automatic downloads, so no one to blame but myself) to Internet Explorer 7. I hated it. Then, I discovered that most of what I hated could be "fixed" by toggling the F8 key. I'm not sure if I like IE7 or not. It's too soon to tell. At least now I don't hate it.

I have no interest whatsoever in Prevx other than as a customer, but so far so good.

Hope I'm not steering anybody wrong. This is just my experience.

I did a search for problem solving and I was directed to Driver Detective site. DD site implied my problems would be solved with their software, so dummy me, I jumped right in blowing $29.95. After installing the software I tried to fix my driver problem with the cell phone communication. I discovered very quickly that I had been taken and immediately began the refund process. How! I think I'm going to get burned on this one. I have started a dispute with Paypal, but looking at the reviews above I'm to optimistic. I emailed the company and they sent me an email back with directions on how to update drivers from their software (no refund). I've tried requesting a refund from "SafeCart" but the email address they provide for support gets "Delivery Status Notification (failure)". I've tried going the BBB online, but unless you have the complete company name, address and phone number to fill out the form, you are not going anywhere! I guess I'll check this one off to experience.

I hope everybody has had the patience to get this far in this comments section. Now you will see the proof of why and how Driver Detective (DD) is not only poor for some people, but actually dangerous, especially for those who blindly trust it and have upgraded stock computers or built their own computers.
I'm not a nut-case, (at least not about this issue), and I am still in contact with the DD team, informing them where they are going wrong. As far as their response to my messages, they do not address the errors that DD makes, they merely write to re-install DD, and, more recently, sent me a list of web addresses of their videos about how to use DD. It made me laugh.
Quickly about me...I bought my first PC in 1993, a Packard Bell x386 (stop laughing!). Pretty much from the start, I became dissatisfied with what I couldn't do with the stock machines I bought. I started upgrading parts on them to increase performance in the areas where I thought needed improvement. I soon became a slave to the quest of higher and higher performance...in all areas. I began reading hardware websites, and became convinced through the experience of others that better performance and stability could be achieved by building my own PC by carefully reading reviews and applying them to my priorities. I've owned the best that could be had, and have spent countless thousands of dollars keeping up with technology. I must say here that right now I do not have the best machine that money can buy...I've had to make compromises because of finances...but it's darn good. Along the way, I learned not only about the hardware itself, but about the importance and value of keeping abreast of firmware and drivers. It's really not hard to do, but as said, you have to know exactly what your hardware is, and where to go to find the updates. Now it can become time-consuming because you never know when a manufacturer releases a new update, so you keep checking back. An example of such a company is nVidia...man, they are always releasing new drivers! Others almost never update their drivers, so that becomes a waste of time.
Now along comes DD...great idea!!! Here's how it's not working...I'm not going to give you a list of all the parts on my computer, I'm just going to give you the specifics where necessary and a little comment. Here are a few of my experiences with DD and their support team:
    1) DD notified me that my Creative Audigy 4 sound card drivers were out of date. I had taken that sound card out months ago and deleted all the software associated with it. I know where DD is getting some of it's information from...the registry. For those of you unfamiliar with the registry let's just keep it simple and say that it is NOT just what is on your machine. There are many hardware and software items/programs that are not on your machine (and you wouldn't even recognize what in heck they are) that Microsoft includes in the registry to make Windows seem "smart". For example, you add a piece of hardware (that happens to be in the Windows database) and it says you've added new hardware and installs it for you. Good deal!!! In my case I took out a piece of hardware, but the uninstall program left some entries in the registry, to which DD responded. DD will continue to hound me about installing updated drivers for a piece of hardware that I no longer have unless and until I go into the registry and remove all references to that soundcard. It's a boring task. What happens if I didn't know what DD was trying to do? It would download the driver file and get you to run the install program. When the install program doesn't find the hardware, you're going to get an error and you're going to wonder what the heck is going on. Good luck on that.
    2) When I got rid of that sound card, I decided to temporarily go with the on-motherboard sound system. I loaded the driver from the motherboard CD, knowing that there would probably be an update for it. Sure enough, DD said there was. I know that the actual manufacturer of the circuitry for the sound on the motherboard is a company called Realtek. But being the geek that I am, clicked on the "Manufacturer" link of DD and it said nVidia. Hmmm. Curious, I started to download the DD recommended driver...boy, what a surprise...it started downloading a GeForce video driver! I stopped that right quick. Now what would've happened? Easy!...my video driver gets updated, not my sound driver...Cool!!! Not much help though. And what would happen if I didn't have an nVidia video card? Here we go again...trying to install a driver to a piece of non-existing hardware...Uh-oh.
    3) Here's a nice one...I have 2 Galaxy 9600GT SLI video cards, not the best of equipment, but SLI is better than no SLI. I get my video drivers from nVidia, they're the latest and they're tailored for all cards that run the particular model of nVidia processors, regardless of who the manufacturer is. So DD says my video driver needs updating. OK. I check the "Manufacturer' link and what I get is DD wants to download a driver that is OLDER than my present driver. Why? Because DD thinks that my video cards were made by a company called EVGA (good cards, by the way) and has gone to the EVGA website and took their latest update intended for a completely different series video card. The potential problem here is not really that I would be getting an older driver, but that EVGA may have altered the coding of the driver for their video card because they don't have quite the same design as other nVidia based cards. And if their changes don't match the way my video cards were set up...well, I just don't know what the result might be. May not make a difference, may make an unnoticable difference, may make a noticeable difference, or it could cause major havoc. Don't know. Companies don't go around sticking other peoples drivers into their cards just to see what would happen. So what did DD support think of this? They said uninstall DD and reinstall it. Being a good boy scout, I did that. No difference, so I did as usual and went to the nVidia website and got the latest driver. At least I can thank DD for informing me that my driver was out of date. Thanks DD.
4)I've got more, but here's the best one...this is really mind-boggling. I have a custom built machine. It says so in DD's system information and in the tools section. I put it there so when I contact support, they know (a diagnostic goes with your question if you contact support, and in the diagnostic is what type of macine you have). DD has correctly identified that I have an Asus M3N72-2 motherboard. That's a good thing. I'm glad they got that right. I just changed from a separate wireless internet card connection to the motherboard ethernet (cabled) connection. The ethernet driver, in this case, is part of a number of drivers included with what is called the "chipset" of the motherboard. Briefly, the chipset is the main communicator of everything that happens on the motherboard. The CPU may be the brains of the computer, but the chipset is the heart that pumps the "blood" to the appropriate parts of the body. So, DD says there is an update for my ethernet driver. It wants to download it and install it on my computer. I look at it. It is for a Gigabyte GA-M52S-S3P motherboard. Let's see...Asus M3N72-D/Gigabyte GA-M52S-S3p...look the same don't they. Ahhh, so what's the difference Paul? It probably uses the same ethernet driver, so shut your yap. Well, the Gigabyte uses an nVidia 520 chipset, while the Asus uses an nVidia 750a-SLI chipset...the only thing they have in common is the name nVidia. They don't handle the same hardware...the 520 doesn't even work with all the same CPU's as the 750a does, not to mention the fact that the 520 isn't SLI capable. Again, NOBODY tests out what one driver would do on an entirely different system. It wouldn't make any sense.
But this is exactly what DD and DD support is doing to you. What was their response to the chipset fiasco? They sent me some links to their video tutorials for the beginner who doesn't know how to operate DD. Very basic tutorials. Not one line about the questions raised. Never have they replied to a direct question or comment.
Now, if you own a Dell, or an HP, etc., and never upgrade it, DD may well work for you. Then again it may not, because sometimes manufacturers change components without notice. But if you upgrade,or build your own, you better not trust DD. You may be able to recover from the problems that it causes, but if you blindly let it do anything it wants, you could be in for a world of hurt. You probably won't, but you COULD end up with a computer that is so messed up that it either won't work properly, or won't work at all. If that be the case, do you think that the DD company will take responsibility for repair/replacement? I think you know the answer to that.
    Good luck,
    Paul C.
P.S. PLEASE! Even if DD has worked well for you, don't let it handle the BIOS for you!

  • Dan M. said on 03/26/2009:

Phwew! Paul C. If you're not a nut case - "at least about this issue", I don't want to read any reviews about which you might be "nuts".
Come up for air, man! As Gene commented above, this is a one-man operation and, obviously, Mr. Hurd of PC Drivers Headqrtrs Inc. couldn't give one crap about what his sw might do to your pc, mine, or others. If he's investing a good sum of money for advertising, you can bet he's reaping a boatload of cash from poor schmucks like us, and laughing all the way to the bank. It still must be a profitable venture.

The best way to avoid further risk to all is to continue to enlighten the uninitiated before they get caught in this Web of Deceit.

The current BBB of Austin rating on PC DHI is "C+" and falling monthly. Their ratings are based, in part, on the number and nature of complaints filed. As the number of complaints rise, so should his rating fall.

But that point is moot if we continue to educate the unwary!

Then this scourge will eventually evaporate.

  • Paul C said on 03/27/2009:

Thanks for your comments guys. Like I said, I am nuts, but my message was just a pleasure to write, so I laughed when you wrote "come up for air, man"...good one. Yeah, I tend to be a little (ahem) verbose at times, but computers are one of my passions, so I don't mind relating my experiences if they will help others out.
As far as I'm concerned, this "scourge" can not go away fast enough. I wouldn't mind spending some time and effort helping to get rid of this scum.
Who is this guy that wrote the review "The Truth" anyway? It's obvious he doesn't know diddley about how bad DD is, yet he advises people to buy, buy, buy it. Is he a cohort of Hurd or something? I'm afraid that the great unwashed would put more stock in what appears to be a "professional review" than they would in the comments after it.
I'm going to think about what I might be able to do to bring this particular malfeasant down. If you have any ideas for me, I will entertain them.

  • Dan M. said on 03/27/2009:

Paul, you must have been directed to the other Techpin site "DD Review - The Truth" which apparently Techpin created 1/08/09 in response to my posts of the same date, accusing me of starting a "denigration campaign" against DD. I believe the reviewer is employed with Techpin, and therefore, easy to . . . "follow the money". Techpin contiues to profit from this obviously malicious software and its creator, Mr. Hurd. They all make $ off the "unwashed", as you put it. I've wondered if they even bother monitoring this site anymore; directing newcomers to "The Truth" on their other site. But the responses there are also mostly negative. Other than my witheld post of 3/23/09, the last "monitor" (Maria M.?) posted a comment 3/03/09.

Also, if you haven't yet, check out the DD Reviews<< polysyncronism.com link below. That's a strange one; with a cautionary, "almost got another sucker" review.

I am not very computer savvy, so I wanted to share my experience with DD. I was online last night and after 3 or 4 trial runs of DD and other driver detection products I was pretty sure I was ready to try the product. I had downloaded the free test and run it, and then went into my system to completely remove it. I had no problems installing it as well no problems removing it. The product never seemed to affect my system in any negative way.
My concerns are when I went into the screen to buy it, the price information is very unclear, you see it as you are going to pay $9.95 for 2 years, based on the suggested price it seems like a very good deal. But what you are really excepting is a 2nd year for an additional $9.95 + first year at $29.95 for a total of $39.90. Definitely not clear, and an area that should be very straight with the consumer. Then I came to the screen that said verify your information. You will confirm the total in the next screen/page. I hit verify, only to find that I was not given the opportunity to confirm any total. I was just charged... $39.90. Unfortunate for DD because once that accured I made up my mind that I did not want the product. I am willing to give the benefit of doubt to DD for this poorly designed check out, but again something that should be clear for the consumer.
I immediately contacted PayPal only to be told they could not help. As my feelings of PayPal are similar to that of the US Post office I was not surprised at there lack of effort. Don't expect much help from PayPal.
My story has many similarities to many I have read, but I want to say that I don't like the nasty language and hateful comments that are left by some. Sharing your bad experience lets others get an Idea of the Negatives, but looses its strength when it is lost on the belligerent talk.
I followed up with a refund request, and an explanation of what happened. I received my full refund in 4hrs, even after I was told by PayPal they were not going to help. Yes there are areas that should be corrected, but under better circumstances I would liked to have tried the product. DD treated me right when it came to the refund ! ! !

After trying everything and looking for drivers or possible errors which could be causing this proplem i turned to driver detective and after updating my realtek high def audio sound card my home studio software finallt picks up the keyboard and works a treat. Many thanks to the driver detective team.

  • Paul C said on 05/13/2009:

    To DnBinProcEsS:
You disagree with ALL these posts?!?!!! You found a driver for your keyboard...that's good. But how can you disagree with people who, like me, have hard and fast proof that DD has the potential to do damage their computers? Are you saying that they don't know what they are talking about?...that they must be stupid? Are you saying that if DD wants to install a Gigabyte 520 chipset driver on my Asus 750a-SLI motherboard that you agree with that? Yet there it was in the posts. You infer that you read it, therefore you disagree with my post. Do you have ANY idea what would have happened to my system if I did that? So it follows that, since you disagree with all the posts, that I should have installed the wrong driver and rendered my machine inoperable. Thank you for the kind thoughts. Has DD ever suggested the right driver for me? Yes. For me, DD's track record is about 50%. I guess you like those odds. If I let DD do every thing it wanted to do for me, I would not have been ABLE to write this post until I fixed the problems it caused (which I probably could, given the time and money).
If you read my post of 3/26, you'd have seen that I too use a Realtek IC for sound. Unlike you, though, I knew enough where to find the driver...from Realtek!!! What a novel idea!!!! What did DD say? Read my post; it wanted to install an nVidia video card driver for my sound card! And you agree with that??? You say that you searched for a suitable driver for your KEYBOARD and did not find one. If you knew something about sound IC's, then you would have known that keyboard drivers may or may not be included in the software. It depends on the manufacturer and IC. You yourself say that you updated your sound card, not that you found the drivers meant specifically for your keyboard. They are not necessarily the same, and in many cases, the software drivers of any particular sound card do not offer full functionality of all the possible features of a keyboard unless it is a simple or standardized keyboard. A sophisticated keyboard will come with an appropriate program for taking advantage of the keyboards features, or you will have to get a commercial product to do the job. I own midi keyboards and sequencers and the drivers of the Realtek IC in itself is not up to the task...the keyboards work if plugged in without additional software, just not the full range of features. For them I use an Audigy. Since I tend to be a bit verbose, let me simplify it...DD didn't find your keyboard drivers. Period. All DD did was (luckily, this time) update your sound card drivers. If you don't understand the difference, then keep plugging for DD and make more people unhappy

I have to chime in on the side of, 'this product does NOT do what it claims'. My first run of DD showed 11 out of date drivers. I read the Help, ran each download/install/reboot individually and had a total of 9 out of date drivers after one pass through them all! I have been writing computer software for over 25 years and am currently a programming consultant. I say this just to show that I am not PC illiterate. I had numerous problems with the product, including drivers that had supposedly been updated REVERTING to the old versions when I used DD to download the next driver. I had 4 drivers that NEVER updated, even though DD said it did. It didn't just do things automatically for you, like it's advertised. Some of the downloads were not intuitive for someone not very PC knowledgeable. Two of my downloads were actually files that I then had to find, open, find the Setup executable, and then run that. I figured that out but a lot of people wouldn't. I also found the Help to not be very helpful. I know that we all have different hardware/software configurations but I was very disappointed with this product.

I've tried for several months to get assistance....everything appears to be out of date on my new computer...yeah right. These people do not know what in the world they are doing. I tried to get a refund to no avail. Do Not Waste Your Money!

I have to uninstall and then reinstall the driver detective program every few days. When ever they do an upgrade to the program. It won't run if I don't. I tryed to get a refund and they said I was over the 60 day limet and thats too bad. I wish I would never have gotten this program.

Driver Detective which I bought and paid for was no help in installing my new camera to my computer. It is impossible to request a refund, as they advertise, for there is no link available
    in order to get refund.

    I paid the $39 and it's a total waste.

Now I'm worried that they will charge my card again when the subscription runs out.

Most companies put you on an automatic yearly renewal.

I email them and get no response.

I can hardly believe it.Here I am the third entry of the new year(I have never been so on top of the topic) to comment on the now infamous Driver Detective purchased on dec.28. At least I"m not alone out here. Down loaded and rerereinstalled over and over, no luck, will not run.No further contact with Mr.(I'll refrain from spelling his name with a"T" to protect the innocent) Hurd seems possible. I guess I can include Safecart as and accomplice in the theft since they got their cut of his scam. There really Ought to be a law against this kind of business practice.Sincerely.Mike

I got an email from them today that they are refunding my money.

    So they aren't totallly bad.

Wasted $29.95. I thought this software might actually help, but the drivers it did download did not even set the states from out-of-date to updated. Their customer services' suggestions were a no good. I eventually did my own research for the drivers and got it fixed myself. Don't waste your money! Do a little Yahoo'ing or Google'ing and find your drivers from the manufacturers directly, free and will fix your problems faster.
Once you pay, you cannot get your money back, so BEWARE!

I too has a problem with this driver detective. It did not do what it said. I cannot get hold with safecart. They have a phone number but no one answer. I contacted paypal they can not help. So these three are in conspiracy to defraud us. Driver Direct, Safecart & paypal. Paypal received lots of complain about htese vender but they continue to deal with them. So it is obvious that paypal is part. Avoid this three and next time before you buy anything check for complains. Definitely do not use paypal. They hide from their user agreement to legallized their uncropolous activities. Based on logic and common sense without readiing the user agrement, Paypal is supposed to be the middle man to safeguard the buyer and seller but no. Sometime it cost to learn a lesson

After buying Driver Detective, I learned the printer problem was a Windows problem and was fixed by Windows Update. Followed advice about to email mikehurd@drivershq.com for refund. Received email same day regarding refund and the refund posted in five days. Good transaction. Thank you.

Be very carefull when ordering the full release. Although the manufecturer says "30 day refund guarantee" you never get the money back, e-mails are simply ignored :-((
