Digital Camera Terminology

Even if we can’t give you the entire digital camera terminology list, here are some words commonly heard in the same sentence as the phrase “digital camera”.

Autofocus is a digital camera’s capability to bring the subject of a picture automatically into sharp focus before taking the picture. Manual focus is one feature is generally found on advanced digital cameras.

Automatic mode in a feature of a digital camera which grants the camera full control of all photographic aspects like the shutter speed and the focus settings. The photographer will have no control over the settings of a picture.

Digital zoom is the feature that magnifies a digital image using special software inside the camera.

Exposure metering refers to a digital camera’s built-in system that can measure the external lighting amount in a certain environment and then determine which the best automatics setting for the photograph are. There are 3 common modes of exposure metering: the first one is center weighted metering (the camera measures the light in a particular area in the center of the shooting frame), second we have the matrix metering (the camera will divide the scenery into different segments and then measure the light level for each particular segment; after that, it can determine the automatic settings based on the settings that would be correct settings for the largest number of settings); the third mode is the spot metering (the camera will only measure the light in one tiny spot right in the center of the frame).

Electronic viewfinder is the term for the small LCD located at the top and at the back of a camera. This LCD displays the picture that you are about to take and this LCD is located inside a small window. The Electronic Viewfinder will show you information about the digital camera settings.

The Conversion Lenses are pieces of lens hardware, small in size, which can fit over the regular camera lens and it provides wide angle capabilities and slightly increased zoom. Just like in the case of exposure metering, there are 3 different types of conversion lenses. The first type of lens is the telephoto (also known as zoom) conversion lenses which provide the camera with additional magnification capabilities. The second type of camera lens is the wide angle conversion lens which increases the scope and it helps place more items and details in the shot.

The last type of lens is the macro conversion lens which helps improve the capability of the lens to take photos with extreme close-up. In order to buy a specific conversion lens, you have to know that they come in different magnification amounts (like 1.5 X). This amount is added to the already existent amount of the lens.

These are only some examples of digital camera terminology but the list is quite bigger. There are still terms to be defined like flash memory, fixed lens camera, image stabilization, megapixels, landscape mode, response time, shooting modes, scene modes, viewfinder or white balance. Stay in touch, we’ll be coming back with more.
