CuteFTP 8 Professional Review

CuteFTP 8 Professional Review
For most computer users, FTP is "a method of transferring files", so I'll leave it this way. After all, you don't have to know all the technical mumbo-jumbo about something to use it. In this case, I am talking about a computer software that was, once, "a FTP client". The only thing that makes me say "was" is the fact that CuteFTP Professional, because this is the program I am talking about, grew and grew in time to become more than just "a FTP client"...

Setup

The last version of the program is labeled 8.0.7, and the setup package is as large as 7.8MB. Installing it can cause some small problems, if you're not paying enough attention. Why? The answer is simple - Google Toolbar. Some people use it, but most of them suddenly notice it inside their browser and scream "spyware!", so after choosing the type of setup (I recommend Typical, if you don't have any special needs), be careful to uncheck the box asking you to install Google Toolbar. These being said, let's move on...

Interface
cuteftppro_8_004.pngThe interface? I am floating around in extasy now, so I won't bother to write about it. Really, last time I used this program, it was less than a year ago(I usually take advantage of the FTP client built into my file manager), and now I am amazed by its redesign. CuteFTP is not only cute, but it's indecently close to perfection - the icons are outstanding, the color scheme is well chosen, and using the incredible amount of features is not as hard as it should be... since there are wizards to stand by your side, and you can see the Connection Wizard in the screenshot above, as an example.

Features

When talking about the capabilities of a FTP client...or something close to it, like CuteFTP, one of the first things to mention is the connections supported. To make it short, CuteFTP Professional can handle them all. All that I can think of, at least... Just hear this - FTP, SFTP, FTPS, HTTP and HTTPS are the connection types that can be initiated from the File>New menu.

icon13.pngThe tools included in this program justify its price entirely - HTML Editor, PodCast Manager, the ability to record, save and run macros, as well as to schedule download or upload tasks, including recurring ones.

For those crazy about security, I only have to mention this: 4096 bit RSA PGP keys can be used with CuteFTP without any additional tool. Files selected for upload can be compressed by the program before placing them on the server, and more... much more. There's only one thing to do now: explore. You have 30 days left of your trial period, once you install the program. Enjoy it!

The Good

For any webmaster, this program is a true gem, while most people that use FTP transfers on a regular basis or work a lot with podcasts should consider getting it at least for a try.

The Bad

I usually like to find flaws in programs, but CuteFTP is too good to be true for now. I'll keep searching and come back later, if I find something...

Conclusion

If somebody would ask me about spending 70$ on a FTP client, my answer could only be "NO", but when talking about CuteFTP Professional, I would gladly pay 100$, because this program is worth two times every single cent that you pay for its registration.
