Cell Phone History

One of the most indispensable accessories for people in our days is certainly the mobile phone. This unit allows you to keep in touch with your friends everywhere you are, send text messages, make video-calls and even browse on the internet. But, how many people know the cell phone history? For those people who don’t know it but want to read about it, we recommend you take a look at this review.

Like almost all major events that took place after 4 July of 1776, the mobile phone was born in the year 1973, on the great American land, although various concepts, plans and prototypes have existed since the early Twentieth Century. The funny thing is that the inventors of the first cell phone is Motorola, a company which in present is about to abandon the mobile phone division. On the 3 April of 1973, Dr. Martin Cooper (a manager of the Motorola Company) was the first person which has ever made a call from a mobile phone. At the other end was none other than Joel Engel, its biggest rival which was working for Bell Labs (Alcatel-Lucent), another big company which was looking for a revolution in technology.

The discussion between those two has not been recorded but there are rumors that Engel was crying with “crocodile tears” upon hearing the news. Before that, together with engineers from Bell Labs, he has focused on developing mobile phone networks. Since then, he has worked hard to achieve many kind of prototypes but only in 1983 the first end-user mobile phone approved by FCC has been launched. When we think about the cell phone history, we have to mention about the Motorola Dynatax 8000x, the first mobile phone in all history.

Being a revolutionary technology, it was not affordable for everyone. It also wasn’t very portable because it had big dimensions and a big weight. The Motorola Dynatac (known also as the Zack’s cell phone from Saved by the Bell), was launched with a price of $3995, a really high price at that time. As we said, the dimensions of the phone seemed to be exaggerated. It measured 330 mm in length and weighted almost 1 KG (869 grams). You could only make calls from this cell phone for maximum 30 minutes and the standby mode hardly touched 8 hours.

This is a funny aspect because the charging time was 10 hours, 2 hours more than the autonomy. Now, all these performances could make us laugh at the present time but we need to remember that in a race for perfection we always start from beginning. During 1983 – 1989, other five DynaTac models had been launched but at the end of 1989, all these were replaced by a much more engaging and powerful unit, the Motorola MicroTAC 9800x.

This is the first cell phone with a “flip” design, having an elegant fold which covers the numerical pad. The dimensions of this phone were also improved. The Motorola MicroTAC 9800x comes with a case which measures 229 mm in length and a total weight of 303 grams. Even so, you should have some resistant pockets to carry this cell phone with you. Being a representative cell phone for the ’80, the MicroTAC was available in 7 models, each having a price between $2495 - $3495. All these being mentioned, ut is nice to see that how much technology has improved.
