Electronic boarding passes go mobile

I was writing yesterday about the new benefits of cell phones which seem to become a must have not only when it comes to receiving and making calls, but also as far as the payments are concerned. Therefore, the contactless card format will help you make payments of no more than $14, when you don’t have money on you or you just forgot your wallet at home.

But the things a phone is good at seem to be an endless territory, so more and more benefits join every day the family of features that are aimed at making it our lives easier.

Air France and KLM made an announcement a couple of days ago concerning their future plans. They want to extend their electronic boarding pass service and in order to do so, they introduced the service “on most of the European and French domestic destinations”.

The procedure is quite simple: you want to go to Paris, for example, you buy the ticket and the boarding pass will be sent to you on a PDA or on your cell phone (as simple as it may be), via SMS, MMS or e-mail. This is much more comfortable, there’s no doubt about it!

The implementation of this new service comes after a period of six months when it was tested on the Paris-Amsterdam-Paris route, being now ready to extend. The service can be used by people travelling from Paris and Amsterdam to lots of European destinations, except for the United Kingdom.

The electronic boarding passes will include the information displayed by conventional ones, and the unique bar code is also included, which will be scanned at the gate.

In addition, the Vice President E-commerce Air France KLM,m Martijn van der Zee, said that “it is our aim to offer as many passengers as possible a comfortable and hassle free travel experience without any unnecessary ‘paperwork’ “.

A backup sync service for Window Mobile phones

Maybe you were tempted to raise your eyebrows and laugh at me when I told you that all major companies are expected to give their best at the 2009 edition of the Mobile World Congress, but you’ll see that I wasn’t kidding you.

If LG, for example, presented a cell phone equipped with a transparent keyboard, the GD900, to be more precise, Microsoft wanted to amaze everyone with a quite impressive service, dedicated to people who own a Windows Mobile-based device. In the given context, Microsoft brought in the spotlight a competitor to Apple’s service called MobileMe. This one will be released under the name of My Phone.

The service is at the present available in the beta mode and, if you want to use it, you will have to sign up for a wait list. This is a backup sync service that allows you to synchronize the information you have stored on your device to a storage space that is “placed” on a website hosted by the famous company – Microsoft.

“If your phone is lost or stolen, or if you upgrade to a new phone, you can easily restore the contacts, calendar appointments, photos, and other information that you stored on My Phone to a compatible new or replacement phone. Most phones that run the Windows Mobile 6 operating system are compatible with My Phone service”.

The great thing about it is the fact that whenever you make some changes, like adding, editing or deleting contacts or appointments, they will immediately appear on your phone.

Therefore, if you own a Windows Mobile phone, you can install the My Phone, which will help you backup information like contacts, documents, all sorts of media files (photos, videos, music), calendar, tasks and SMS. The My Phone account gives you the chance to store no more than 200 MB on the website and Microsoft will not charge a fee for the service. At least not right now. Pretty nice, right?
