Animal therapy with Paro
Posted by: Maria Mihale in Gadgets

More and more robots are being created these days, with the faith that they will bring not only an innovation as far as the approach of life is concerned, but also another way, hopefully more efficient, to solve problems the humanity is obliged to deal with.

Robots are meant to take care of our grand-parents, when they are not able anymore to do this themselves, they are meant to teach our children mathematics and literature, they are meant to help people who have all sorts of disabilities to carry on with their lives. Last, but not least, robots are here to stay.
Take PARO for example. It is “an advanced interactive robot developed by AIST†that has one purpose and one purpose only: to bring the benefits implied by the animal therapy in the area of patients in need who live in hospitals or extended care facilities for a period of time.

Paro will be a great help when it comes to reducing the stress of the patients and their caregivers, stimulates the interaction between them, has a psychological effect (which has been demonstrated) on patients (they become more relaxed and motivated), and helps them become more sociable.

There are five different types of sensors that you can find within this robot, such as audition, light, posture, tactile and temperature, to help Paro perceive not only the people surrounding it, but also the entire environment.
Another great thing is that the user can teach Paro to behave just the way he/she would like and to respond to the name it has been given. I believe it’s more than enough for the Guinness World Records to give this robot a certificate that attests it as the “world’s most therapeutic robotâ€.
