Gadgets for geeks. Drunk geeks.

I don’t like guns. They promote violence and disrespect and this is the last thing the humankind needs these days. Nevertheless, the media is completely invaded by such appearances, whether we like it or not, but this doesn’t mean we must be all carried away and spread the word about them.

And it’s sad when all sorts of gadgets take the shape of weapons. Maybe the idea of an Alcohol Shot Gun is somehow amusing, if you don’t think about it too much, but I don’t think so.

Anyway, for those who can’t control the outbursts of fury, here it is a substitute for weapons that is able to immediately free your mind. The Alcohol Shot Gun gives you the chance to experience another type of shot.

Therefore, “pour in an ounce of your favorite drink into the cartridge, cock the trigger, point and shoot”. This is the only thing you should do. Easy, right? Not to mention the fact that, looking at the picture, handling the device seems the funniest thing to do.

Now, if you ask me, you must be quite resistant to alcohol, if you want to resist this type of shots, ‘cause this is “light on design, but heavy on shooting alcohol”. If you want to test your friends, who are always bragging about how much liquor they can “bear”, you’d be happy to know that this is perfect for you to get them tested.

The only problem is that the Alcohol Shot Gun isn’t a real product, being just a concept for the moment. Therefore, the information about pricing and the release date (if it will ever get released) isn’t available. If it will have the chance to hit the mass production, this will be another member of the gadgets for geeks family. Drunk or not, because who knows? Maybe people will choose to use to drink juice.

USB flash drive in use = drive taking its flight

usb-flash-drive-in-use-drive-taking-its-flight-01s
Here’s a general truth: USB flash drives weren’t made for you to store information on it. You may not believe me, but that’s the way things are. I swear to God it’s true. And maybe you wonder about the reason that led to the creation of these devices. It’s simple: they were made for people to fulfilling childhood dreams that seem to be unattainable.

usb-flash-drive-in-use-drive-taking-its-flight-01

It sounds weird, but I’ll explain. You must have wanted all sorts of things when you were a little child and you probably still do. You’re aware of the fact that you won’t ever have the chance to make those dreams come true, so USB flash drives are just what the doctor ordered. They allow you to adopt the pet you’ve always wanted to have, to “drive” a miniature Beetle or to fly your own airplane.

Yes, I made no mistake. You can do all of those things by only owning such a gadget. Here you have, for example, the Airplane USB Drive.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

Provided with an 8GB capacity storage, the device comes with a retractable USB connector, so that the airplane design isn’t “damaged”.

As far as the features are concerned, they include: the USB 2.0 connection, the internal memory of 8GB, compatibility with Windows 98 second edition / Millienium / 2000 / XP / Vista, Mac OS 10.x or improved versions and Linux 2.4.2 or later, and support for all file formats.

The Airplane USB Drive measures 67 x 30 x 25 millimeters and can be purchased from Chinavision for a price of 18.62 Euros (meaning $23.87) if you want to buy only one. Just watch out: the airplane shaped USB flash drive in use means that the gadget will immediately take its flight. Just kidding.

Best kitchen appliances are always weird

People use to take toasters for granted, even if they don’t know very well the history of these humble devices: they don’t know when the toasters first appeared or who invented the first electric device to toast bread.

If you’re not willing to give it more than a wild guess, you won’t be able to tell me the origin of that weird thing that you can see in the picture below. Even if it might sound outrageous (and it does), the device is nothing but a portable toaster. Ok, you probably don’t understand how the cake-knife-like toaster is indeed… a toaster. But it is.

best-kitchen-appliances-are-always-weird-01

And if you wonder how in earth it works, well let me tell you that it’s actually a piece of cake, if I may say so. The idea is to run the handheld toaster over the slice of bread until the bread looks just like you want it to. When you see that gold color all over the slice, you’ll know that your breakfast is ready. But, in order to be more convinced, there’s an animated graphic user interface that will give you the information you need with respect to how well the bread has been toasted. I told you, you can see it for yourself, but don’t refuse a helping hand, would you?

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

It looks interesting, I agree, but when thinking about holding the slice of bread in my hand when toasting… well, I’ll have to think twice when it comes to this Portable Toaster. Unfortunately, this is the proof that best kitchen appliances are always weird.

Robotic nurse to take care of our elders

robotic-nurse-to-take-care-of-our-elders-01s
My grandfather is an 83 years old “young man”, as he likes to say. Even if it makes everybody laugh (me included), I can’t argue with him when saying such a nonsense, due to its very good shape, which makes him a whole lot heftier than younger people.

He has always been afraid of the fact that one day he won’t be able to do those things he loves most in this world, not to mention the common activities that a human being is able to do, like walking, talking, feeding himself and so on. What he fears most is that someday he’ll be a burden for us, his family. I can completely understand him, but this doesn’t mean he has reasons to be afraid. As far as I’m concerned, at least.

robotic-nurse-to-take-care-of-our-elders-011

Anyway, the point is that many elderly people find themselves in the same situation when reaching a certain age, while us, the younger generations, are tempted to neglect them and to forget how much they meant to us and they still do.

Japanese, for example, are thinking about fixing this problem. An independent administrative institution called NEDO, began a five-year research and development project, back in 2006, the “Project for Strategic Development of Advanced Robotics Elemental Technologies”. And what did Nedo do? Well, it selected six different robots that were and will be developed in the following years (two, to be more precise).

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

Now, one of those robots was developed by Murata Machinery, being in fact a robotic nurse that is able to do whatever a real nurse can. And one of the most important things is that this robot can deliver medication to the patients it takes care of.

This is a great idea, you have to admit, even if a soulless creature won’t ever replace the warmth you could give to your elders.

Decorative light bulbs

decorative-light-bulbs-01s
The last time I was to a social event was when I was invited to play the role of a photographer at a little girl’s birthday party. I enjoyed it very much and since then I’m certain about the fact that kids know how to have fun a much more pure and, why not, funny way, that grown-ups. It’s a fact no one can deny.

decorative-light-bulbs-01

One of the best moments was undoubtedly when two fairytale characters started to entertain the little ones, with all sorts of contests, songs, poems and tricks. They painted the kids’ faces with millions of colors, converting them into superheroes, gods and goddesses, fabulous creatures and cartoon characters. In addition, they played with balloons and made them look in ways that no one could ever imagine before.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

They looked just like these decorative light bulbs do. ‘Cause if you thought that they were balloon animals, let me tell you you’re so very wrong. They’re nothing but some playful light bulbs designed by Thelermont Hupton, which are known under the name of Blown Up lamps.

You have to admit that they have a very amusing silhouette, looking so very much like the made-of-balloons sculptures that I mentioned earlier, but the main difference consists of the fact that these ones don’t bend, even if it might seem they do.

decorative-light-bulbs-02

“Glass blown, floor standing lights combining the skills of the glassworker and the playfulness of clowns and children’s entertainers. If only glass were as pliable as balloons!”.

The decorative light bulbs are available for purchasing right from the designer’s website, even if I couldn’t find the prices for these products, as much as I looked for them.
