Malware writers use Redmond to spread malware

Malware writers use Redmond to spread malware

Experts are warning of a bogus Microsoft security bulletin that contains malware designed to take control of the user's PC.secutiry
The emails contain the header 'Microsoft Security Bulletin MS07-0065' and come with Microsoft logos and a layout very similar to the Microsoft web page.

Recipients are told that a zero-day flaw in Outlook has already been exploited to infect over 100,000 machines, and the email contains a link to the 'patch' for the problem

According to security firm Sophos, security bulletins from Microsoft describing vulnerabilities in its software are a common occurrence, so it comes as no surprise to see hackers adopting this kind of disguise in their attempt to infect Windows PCs.
The link in fact downloads the Behav-112 Trojan, which allows the computer to be operated remotely to send spam or take part in distributed denial-of-service attacks. The emails have been widely spammed out over the past few days.

Better cooled servers

Better cooled servers

Dell announced recently its partnership with data centre cooling specialist Emerson Network Power in order to boost its services business while cutting power consumption in the data centre.

dell logoThe two companies will combine salesforces in selling Emerson's XD cooling system and offer joint data centre assessments. Dell servers will also be certified for use with Emerson's cooling technologies.
Their goal is to save between 30to 50 percent power and an 80 per cent increase in system performance.
Current data centre cooling systems pump air through floor tiles, referred to as peripheral cooling. But, as the cold air travels from the floor to the server, it loses a large part of its cooling capacity.
The XD system uses liquid cooling that relies on refrigerants commonly used in consumer refrigerators and cars.
The cooling is delivered directly to the cooling coils on the server or server cabinet through a network of hoses attached to outlets in the ceiling.
Emerson has been shipping its XD system since 2001 and has installed it at about 300 sites and 6,000 server racks.
The majority of Liebert's customers use the technology to retrofit existing server rooms because they hit a ceiling in the power supply that they can bring into their data centers for cooling and powering servers.

Increasing the cooling efficiency frees up power that can be used to install additional servers. The XD cooling system is about 20 per cent more expensive than alternative technologies. But users recoup the costs by installing up to four times as many servers in the same space.

Emerson designed a liquid cooling system for IBM and has worked with HP on its Dynamic Smart Cooling technology unveiled in November.

The HP technology uses a network of sensors to determine hotspots in the room and adjust the cooling loads automatically. When HP unveiled the technology, it claimed power cost savings of up to 40 per cent.

HP is currently rolling out the technology in its own data centers, but it has not yet been shipped to any customers, said Stack.

Liquid server cooling is not new. But most other major server vendors are reluctant to engage in such a deep partnership because they have their own consulting businesses.

Yahoo Gets Smart in Online Ad Competition

Challenging its competitors, Yahoo new online advertising tools that rely on what is called ‘behavioral targeting’ to make display ads more relevant.

The new advertising platform SmartAds gives marketers: the ability to deliver tailored display ads to highly targeted audiences. According to Yahoo, SmartAds combines the company's rich media capabilities with new ad serving technology that automatically converts marketers' creative campaign elements and targeted offerings into relevant ads.

SmartAds works by connecting users with what they are looking for on the basis of their expressed interests. For example, if a user is browsing for hybrid cars in Yahoo Autos and had previously selected San Francisco as his or her default location in Yahoo Weather, Yahoo's SmartAds platform can assemble and deliver a display ad in real time to showcase a hybrid vehicle from a major auto brand, as well as local dealer information and current lease rates.

Yahoo's SmartAds platform also allows advertisers and agencies to design a single set of individual creative components, provide Yahoo with that artwork, and a feed to their entire database of offers, then allow Yahoo's SmartAds technology to generate the hundreds of unique ad combinations with those components.

Yahoo said it would take a phased approach to rolling out the SmartAds platform, making it available first on its properties to travel industry advertisers in the U.S. The company has plans to expand it to additional vertical industries over the coming months and, in the future, deliver Smart Ads on its broader network of sites.
